Victorian Governor Our New Patron

February 25, 2016

The Old Colonists’ Association of Victoria (OCAV) is honoured that Victoria’s first female Governor of Victoria, the Honourable Linda Dessau AC, has agreed to be its Patron.

Kevin Neville, Chair, said today: “We are delighted that she has kindly accepted our invitation.”

The patronage comes at a significant time for OCAV as it gears up to celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2019.

“The Governor has a long history of championing social justice and standing up for people who are marginalised,” Mr Neville said.

He said her philosophy mirrored the vision and mission of OCAV which has a proud history of caring for older Victorians in need.

“We were established by Victoria’s founding Government and founding families to provide housing and care for elderly Victorians in need.”

“OCAV’s origins, through the foresight of George Selth Coppin, recognised the plight of early settlers who had worked hard for this country and then in later years had no one to care for them,” he said.

Today OCAV cares for around 500 elderly people who have financial, social, security and physical needs in four villages across Victoria.

Mr Neville said that OCAV looked forward to welcoming the Governor to one of the villages during her time as patron.

“Our home has always been a place where family and friends are welcome.  Our cottage at Rushall Park is no different and the community of friends here is important to us and that’s why their work is part of my art box,” Jennifer Barden said.
